Personal Statement
Throughout my time at the University at Albany, I have been committed to learning about my community, both on and off-campus. I use my education as an anchor to address the social issues around me, recognizing the privilege of formal education as a tool for meaningful engagement and action. I strive to center the voices of those affected by social challenges and prioritize working in the community to learn how members want to be uplifted. This semester, I worked to bridge the gap between campus and community by connecting my university’s administration with local partners to support elementary school students in the South End of Albany. While organizing a day of gardening, I was able to source funding for their projects and lead students in hands-on learning. My goal was to provide resources for students in historically underserved areas and to enrich their education. Through my work, I have made connections with community agencies and nonprofit organizations committed to progressing social justice. I am committed to sharing my passion for community support through person-centered care and direct action. I encourage us all to share our experiences and resources to educate each other and to lead initiatives that drive greater change.
