From the president

Moujan Moghimi is a dedicated student leader at Rutgers University–Newark, known for her commitment to civic engagement, social equity, and community empowerment. Elected as Community Outreach Senator in Fall 2024, she has worked to strengthen connections between the Student Governing Association (SGA) and various student organizations, championing initiatives like an accessibility audit to promote campus inclusivity. As a Campaign Coordinator for New Jersey Public Interest Research (NJPIRG), Moujan leads advocacy efforts around public interest issues, creates impactful programming, and mentors student volunteers to become effective organizers. Her leadership extends beyond campus—she was selected as a Capitol Hill Fellow through Braven and the Sheila Y. Oliver Center for Politics and Race in America, where she will serve as a Congressional Intern and gain firsthand experience in legislative advocacy. Moujan seeks to use the Newman Civic Fellowship to address campus barriers, expand accessibility, increase civic participation, and support vulnerable student populations. Her values-driven leadership and passion for systemic change make her an ideal candidate for the fellowship.

Personal Statement

At a young age, I became familiar with prejudice and once asked my aunt why it felt like the world hated us for being different. She replied, “Nobody will ever care about us.” That quote stayed with me -- through my seventh-grade speech on discrimination and the personal experiences I shared during it. I asked the audience if they had ever been told their life didn’t matter. In a classroom full of marginalized students, I watched as every hand went up. Since then, I have been deeply committed to public service and advocacy work, to uplift my community, shape inclusive policies, and help build a more equitable future. My roles as Community Outreach Senator in the Student Governing Association (SGA) and Campaign Coordinator with the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG) have allowed me to foster connections across campus and begin addressing the societal issues students face. The Newman Civic Fellowship represents an opportunity to transform the knowledge I have gained into meaningful action. Through this platform, I aim to address the systemic barriers that hinder Rutgers University–Newark students from reaching their full potential and to be part of lasting, transformative change.
